I Am A Flower Whose Petals Have Been Replaced With Empty Space

by Tom Goss

All yesterday's
words are being
carefully distilled
into an acrid concoction
that makes the mouth
cringe with the earthshaking
devastation of innumerable goodbyes.

The naive belief in destiny
was long ago left to putrify
upon the vine. We are but spokes
in a tremendous wheel, forever tempted
by the seeming nearness of the central hub
and its honeyed delights. Yet the cruel
whirl of temptation hurls each dream of completion
into the abyss. And what shall remain of my shattered
core except for a memory of a midnight campus kiss,
when, unbeknownst to me, the haughty laugh of the universe
replaced the bark of that old tree.
