Bending Yourself Into New Shapes

by Jared Orlando

for the times you were just parchment paper
when he needed to bleed his words out
every time love became an excuse to scream at you
by turning you into his bedroom walls
when he tried to keep the waters from flowing out
over his eyes while you waved flags onshore
for when you watched him drifting, and
you used your eyelashes to hoist his spirits up
for those times you caught the petals
that twirled off his body when nature gave up on him
when you became a piano he walked on and
your once pristine ivory keys became tarnished
for the times when you were a beautiful song but
he twisted your key signatures like a tie wrap
when you hid your face from view and
escaped into an alleyway in the back of your mind
for when you were too fearful to face yourself,
never knowing which side of you would show
your knees knocking together like two rocks
on the bottom of a water-filled bucket
when your love for life was like two sides
of the same velcro that never seemed to mesh
for when you fell in love with a boy so broken
that you spent your whole life bending yourself
into new shapes to keep him together
