I chose not to run today

by Devon E Mattys

I chose not to run today.
Instead, I cuddled my cat
in bed
well past six, when I usually rise for work.
The rain was so light
we could not hear it on the roof.
But the squirrel on the branch outside our window
looked haggard and wet.
So I listened when my girl turned her head to me
and, with her knowing eyes, did urge:
"Mom, don't go anywhere yet."

I don't run, nor do I have a cat. But I get that exact same gaze from my dog, so I know the feels.
