Fleeting

by Richard Vince

You never really arrived, but
I mourn your departure
All the same.

Some part of me wants you
To know this: to know
That you were significant,
If only for a
Fleeting moment.

This is my speciality:
Spinning out the briefest of
Moments, however mundane,
Into a long thread that slowly
Strangles me and binds me
Firmly to the past.

I remember what I should
Forget, and forget what
I want to remember.

It seems I go through life
Facing the wrong way:
I need to learn to ignore
The past and look
To the future.

While not forgetting the past, you sensibly direct one to look to the future.
