Holding Her As If She Was The Last Source of Light On Earth

by Jared Orlando

I held her body as if it were
Granules of sand held together by
Salted tears shed for the men
Who crushed her out like cigarettes

Her face was stretched canvas
A spirit deflated with no shape
It was all I could do for her not
To be soaked up in the floorboards

I gave her my shoulders, my ears
I placed her fingers on my sides
Sewing patches into her skin
Where she let the wounds give way

Speaking poetry at her sleepy eyes
Hoping they’d open long enough
To see my lips mouth the words
"You shine bright enough"

I love this, but the last line somehow just doesn't seem strong enough for helping that broken person.
