on telling

by Amos Last

                                         on telling

i know we haven’t been in touch
                            the way we were before
                              when this was new
                               when we were you
                                        and me
                                         in ebb
                                         in flow
perhaps we became accustomed to the change
or to the way the day recedes
                                      (more now)
within our imagination of the perception of change
                                 but really now
what is the difference if you tell me what i don’t understand
or if you tell me that
what i really want to hear is no longer true

Nicely ironic title for a 'what if' poem.

The form (almost antiphonal) is so right for the substance of this poem.
