i'll be too drunk to know it. by Jared Orlando
I’d like to take this time
To congratulate myself
So, if you would gladly sit
Get comfortable, spare me
A few minutes to gloat
Turn the house lights down
Spotlight please, testing,
Throat cleared, gesturing,
Text away, tweet away, but
I would like to point out that
I’ve woken without pain
Today, as well as yesterday
I crossed the road without
Being hammered down
I drank enough to kill a man
And only gained a headache
I’ve kissed women in the rain
Without lightening bolts striking
Setting my insides on fire
I’ve teetered outside the lines
Of subtle danger, stepping off
Unbrushed and unscathed
I was born to die, but not now
But when I do, it’ll be
In the middle of a bright day
In the midst of mundane activity
Between sips of coffee,
Watching the suds stream down
The windows at the car wash
Yes, friends, please clap for me
I stand before you as a testament
For the chokehold is always near
But when it comes,
I’ll be too drunk to know it
