Did you notice?

by Jared Orlando

At 8:45AM on December 5th,

I passed you getting off the #600 train
Your pacing was rushed and stilted
With your pea coat just a little too tight
Destination: Anaheim

As the boxcars hurried by above
Descending the stairs below
You brushed me, accidentally,
My arms stopped working
And my soul thus caught fire

Tunnel vision; I saw only you
And although altogether fleeting
I caught the angles of your face
A nervousness in your eye-
You were in worn dancing shoes

Did you notice?

I lost myself in bringing you flowers
In the spring
And giving you my jacket
In the winter
In all of 5 minutes
I seemed to have figured you out and
You were perfect

I’m not one for missed connections
For following another's footsteps
Cutting through Union Station and
Into the sun-drenched world
But I think-
Yes-
I’d go with you anywhere

I’m not asking for coffee and tea
For a midnight drink at the Virgil
A waltz around Echo Park Lake
Or even another brush of the shoulder
What I want-
I want you to never
Have to depart another train alone

I hope you find this letter in your best moment
When you’re on time, and in your favorite dress
Waking up on an eastbound bus
Along the way you’ll find me waiting

What a great write! A slice of times eye with all the what ifs.
