9. by Eli Skipp3.
At the loss of her heart and the loss of her identity,
the only thing left to her in her total isolation,
Elke feels truly alone.
Before her great migration across the San Gabriel
Mountains, Elke had not been alone. She had been
a part of a whole, connected across distance and
geography, and felt it in the soft spots of her feet
as she walked.
Defeated and watched, she begins to beg and bargain,
pleading for the return of her rightful heart and the
swift removal of this mechanical thing that has
taken up residence behind her breastbones, but
to no avail.
"There is no heart but your heart," the coyotes tell her,
and she is undone.
