Elke first met the coyotes the night they brought death into
the world, birthing it from within their cavernous ribcages and
Before then, none of the creatures of the world knew what
"ending" was. They bred in infinite families, cooing at each
other in safety and closeness, and spreading over the plains
and valleys like oozing clay.
Drawn to the flames emanating from her own ribcage, they
confide in her the workings of their death. They tell her there
is just not enough room anymore. Don't worry, they promise.
We will keep the gate.
