A day bed of college-ruled comfort

by Jared Orlando

I hid you in the margins of my favorite notebooks
A convenience I kept where in the early mornings
and the late nights, I’d find you sweetly sleeping
Soundlessly in the starting corners of my past poems,
A day bed of college-ruled comfort
Your name was sketched deep with thin, slanted curves
My pen dancing wildly in the edges, you’d call out
And it still breaks me every time
I wish to find you in your best moments
In your favorite clothes, or without
Yet like my prose I fabricate your existence
To me
To better my sleep and my mood
I respond to the words that I picture you saying
But never said
So instead you are snuggled in the creases
Under my tired eyes
At peace and in love with the world
And possibly in love with me
