maybe, one more museum

by Gabriel Ricard

I shouldn’t have said too much nine or ten thousand times.
I shouldn’t have tried to kiss you so often.

I should have accepted that there would only be
but so many chances to listen to your records
in the basement cool of your cluttered bedroom.

I should have made do with what I got.

While we’re at it,
I probably shouldn’t be writing
stuff like this anymore.

Those eyes that breathe the frenzy of fascination?
Hands that could probably light a smoke on their own?
Snoring that could wake up a city devoted to the pitfalls of December 31st?

What else can I say about all that?

I’ll knock it off. I’ll give it up.
I’ll say one more thing,
one more unbelievably clever,
stupidly earnest closing statement
that will gently take these things by the hand,
and lead them into the archives.

I’m still thinking.
Hold on,
wait,
wait,
wait,
stand as still as you can,
and just let me think of one more really good thing.

It’s around here somewhere.
It was halfway to all done just the other day.
