Small Flowers On An Ordinarily-Blue Dress

by Jared Orlando

You should've known better
Showing up with bright red lips, smirking,
Your cute, girlish feet somewhere
Hidden inside brown, leather riding boots
Leading you to my doorstep
Under my breath, I cringe
"Cut that hair and it's all over for me, babe."
Night is only beginning
As I watch the last rays of daylight achingly
Set fire to the small flowers on an ordinarily blue dress
Which only you can make look perfect
So I ask you to spin
And as I'm catching my breath
You dash around me
Taking a Penfolds Bin 2 Shiraz by the neck
("No glasses necessary")
And by the hand (those hands..)
You take me to the rooftop
Up here, there are explosions of life
Downtown waves a smoggy hand
And it's air that is thick enough to bite
The 101 is at a standstill
Smearing a dark red line across the horizon
Yet. It's here in the lack of light
That makes it seem as though
You are lighting the world
And through your eyes, I see stars
I wave my fingers and hands
Tracing, drunkenly, Orion
The trifecta of Jupiter, Mercury, Venus
A moment of awe that leaves me beside myself, and then
"What are you fucking talking about. Stand too close to me."
The rooftop crunches beneath my feet
And my shoulder begins to tingle
Due to our proximity, or your dirty mouth, I'll never know
"Did you see that? Did you just fucking see that?"
No, my eyes say
As you put the bottle up to your lips
..those lips..
Your eyes close, and when they open
A mute button is pressed upon the night
And it's then that you stumble just right
And I fall with you just the same
"It's great and all, but it's no Virginia."
"Yeah, but at least it isn't Louisiana."
She knows I'm right,
As I press my lips against her forehead
And consciousness slips from underneath me
