A Version of Today

by John Harder

Misery by the beach
with sunrise approaching
We spin toward the dawn
with unthinkable speed
yet time stands still
in this cool morning breeze

A faint light
foreshadows day to come
It gives false hope
to those who fear darkness
Soulless souls
would rather hide
by the warmth of a fire
in cowardly repose

Midday comes fast
The cool morn forgotten
Heat radiates from a star
The closest one we know
Why giver of life
do you scorch us so?
Leaves them burnt
in a lethargic daze
Unwilling to give
the least bit respite

Evening at last
The sweltering furnace
begins to recede
to relinquish it's fury
for a short time
The moment is right
for one to emerge
and begin a different version
of today

Black sets in
settles comfortably
where it left off last
Now twilight owns the sky
it shares with a rock
An angry reflection
of the daylight's wrath
lest we forget
and become complacent
Always remains
a slight discomfort

A beautiful piece of work. Well done!

Re-read later ibn the evening and would like to add--more specifically, that this seems innoccuios, but contains a menacing underlying tone, and the readers doubts or suspicions are realized in the final verse. I reiterate-- a wonderful write!
