but truly

by Angela Thomas

i lament the love of the love passed.
that sounds so vague and cliche. let
me break it down for you. ready? he
led me on to believe that what we had

was love. it was wrapped in morning's
sweet embrace and 'i'm having a bad
day, make it better'. there were times
he made me feel like i was the only

girl in the world. and there were times
he made me feel like i was the only
girl in the world. i think what really happened
was there was a thought, fleeting, of what

we could be. starlight gazing and summer
barbaque brazing. mere dreams come sunlight.

yes. this could have been about far too many experiences in my life, particularly "a thought, fleeting, of what / we could be". i wasted too much time on unrealisable potential; not just my time either. this is superb. how has it taken me nearly ten years to find your poetry?
