in blue

by Peter Humphreys

suddenly
not sure why
I looked up
from my desultory plate
to see disharmony
in blue

three sisters
perhaps three enemies
making polite conversation
whilst looking
at the wall
the floor,
the watch
but never
each other
the fourth
in green
sought
escape routes

she looked at me
in despair
startled
like a heifer
outside the slaughterhouse
knowing what comes next
unable to change history
she would be blued
in time

I love what your imagination created for these unknown sisters!
