the old town wall

by Peter Humphreys

sitting
next
the old town wall
shadows deep
and dark
across
the sunlit lawn
I see initials
love signs
tokens
scratched
as passing fancies
in the sandstone
soft

whence
where
are these lovers now
did they fall in
or be parted by
the wars
that scoured
this ancient place

sitting 'neath
a linden tree
a blackbird
caught
in the flight of
my eye
tracing shadows
across that verdant lawn
where times past
perhaps late at night
carved their love
as one
on meadow sweet
'neath wall
and the moon's
forever light
