louisiana 1903 by Artur DesruisseauxI was walking around near all those old homes built in the 1800s
when I get really depressed, I like to walk around houses built in the 1800s
anyway, I stopped in front of this great big tree that looked old
"I'm over 150 years old" the sign said
you look it, I thought
then I walked down the street and lit a cigarette
down on the ground were all these smashed berries in the street
so I looked up and this great big tree was looking down on me
then I heard a voice
"its a mulberry tree!"
"what?" I said
"a mulberry tree!"
"are you sure?"
"yes I'm sure!
"are you sure you're sure?"
"yes I'm sure I'm sure, I've been living here since 1957."
"ok, I said"
there was nice little old lady watering her lawn
"that's a long time, I said"
"yes I know she said"
"you have a nice house, I said"
"thank you"
"where do you live, she said"
"I live a few blocks over, I said"
"hmm, she said"
"are you going to the fair? she asked me."
"no, I don't think I will go."
"how come? she asked"
"I don't like fairs"
"hmm, she said"
"how old is that mulberry tree again? I asked"
"older than you, she said"
"are you sure, I asked"
"maybe, maybe not, I think it's time you got going, she said"
"me too I said, take care"
at the end of the street I went into a bar
I ordered a beer
someone screamed "I hope you fucking die"
I hope they weren't talking about me
I have so much to live for
"how mean" I thought
then someone played something dumb
on the juke box and I was
home
