As You Sleep

by Joe Cramer

I listen to you sleep,
your softest of breath soothes me
as the prospect of slumber eludes me
from ever having rest.

I attest to this fact
as I lay awake
trying to calm my scurrying mind
leaving all things behind.

as it should be,
as it would be.

Nothing ever really works out for me
Yet everything always remains the same.
These demons, they never set me free
yet I only have myself to blame.

I wonder when this song,
this dance will ever end.
I try so hard, yet the chance
remains the self-same dance.

I watch you sleeping,
wondering if you are dreaming
and what I could ever say or do
to keep me next to you.
