what do the boys say
when chanced upon in the lockers
defending their masculinity
about how they are not gay

I remember those days
so very long ago
I was unkind too
never knowing what I should say
or do

so I made the appropriate commentary
in a weak defense of myself
it didn't work,
I remained a jerk

and it took so many long years
to learn who I really was,
or wasn't, for that matter
for all that I have said

or not said
I finally realized
that I must apologize
and accept life as it is

I changed, my life rearranged
as did my feelings
though I still make mistakes
at least I am not a fake
