an elephant's life

by Angela Thomas

i remember our first kiss. it started
to rain so we ducked under an awning
and ended up in line at an ice cream shop.
i'm lactose intolerant. it wasn't until Brad

behind the counter asked what i wanted
that i realized where exactly i was and
that was no sorbet on the menu. vanilla
with rainbow sprinkles. i lusted for it so bad

it's tattooed on my wrist. we ate and walked
and laughed and ended up on a great lawn,
your hand pulled my chin closer and your lips were
so soft. i could taste the chocolate ice cream lingering.

you distracted me so much i forgot where i was for a moment.
and again, here i think about you when i know i shouldn't.

Perfect imagery.
