Wallflower

by David Maurice

Standing by this wall
I watch in jaded eyes
I can't hide the fear
that tears at my soul
My throat closes
as I see you pass by
I can't break out
of my wooden role

And if you noticed
me standing here
And if you smiled
a welcome dear
I'd want to say hi
To give it a try

The other children hear
the piper's call
and dance to his beat,
in a perfect row
I want to follow,
but I cling to my wall
jealously aching,
watching them go

And if you said
you'd take me away
And if you said
You'd love me today
I'd want to love you
My wish come true

But I'd just be dreaming
curled in a ball
If I thought
you'd love me at all

So I'll just stand
here by my wall

You have a tremendous gift for observation, it would seem. This was a great write.
