Fable of the Mouse and the Snake

by Johanna May

Once there was and once there was not
a mouse in a mousy existence
it thrived inspite the daily onslaught
of the jungle with sheer persistence

One day in search of a greater feast
the critter strayed past the lake
there it met a sinuous beast
with eyne that came with a snake

Serpent halt, take thy leave now
the brave little rodent intoned
I verily swear I’ll be the death of thou
‘tis wiser to swallow yon stones

The serpent would have if it could fleer
at this lunch that is aptly bijou
closer it hissed with malice and sneer
less nicer to hear than to chew!

Hasty snake lunged after its gloat
but could not swallow the chouse
it bit down hard from inside the throat
so snake did choke from the mouse

~

An integral query the snake did forsake
would have averted death’s cause
To ask verily should a snake be a snake
when a mouse is not clearly a mouse?
