Habit at Four in the Afternoon

by Johanna May

( images in haiku )

i

red and orange leaves
never saw trees bleed so much
while snow spat on them

ii

rain taps on windows
the chill comes from somewhere near
somewhere inside me

iii

house of whisperings
spider-like crawling through walls
barely audible

iv

strange white bathrooms
droplets fall from showered face
some have salt in them

v

a garden of crows
uprooted by my footsteps
harvested by clouds

vi

fragrant aisles and rows
a fruit plucked from a dragon
bought with strange coins

vii

bombardment of green
the pollens are gentler here
the sneezes quieter

viii

bus and train schedules
a city governed by time
even the heartbeats

xi

yellow dappled sun
trees’ shadows sleeping on grass
pissed on by squirrels

x

inside a cocoon—-
caterpillar is dreaming
purple colored wings
