How Do You Make a Poem?

by Johanna May

How do you make a poem true?
You make it a mirror of the unheard,
unsung, unshown wounds of the world.

How do you make a poem weep?
You make it a mirror of the unheard,
unsung, unshown wounds of the world
and then give it a mirror
to look at itself.

How do you make a poem fight?
You take all the unheard, unsung,
unshown wounds of the world
and say, ‘these are your children.’
