Generations

by Richard Vince

We grew up in different worlds,
You and I: everything had changed
By the time you were conscious of it.

For some reason, I feel a need
To help you discover what I found
On my own, as if it will
Somehow bridge the chasm between
Your generation and mine.

Sometimes, my immature mind
Tries to forget the difference,
So I place reminders in the way
In case it succeeds.

It’s all for self defence, really:
A strategy to keep me where
I should be; to prevent me from
Throwing away what’s important.
I choose to disguise it as
Benevolence, even though I know
What I am really doing.

If only it could be simple:
If only I could relax
Rather than having to
Second guess myself.

If only I could enjoy your company
Rather than look for
Reasons not to.
