the opposite of forever is plaid.

by Maria Francesca

color is too intense a thing
to wear the same one every day
or to paint it on my walls.

I can't say for sure
I won't hate it tomorrow
or barring that
just want to try a little of something else.
or maybe go entirely colorless
for a few days or years.

it's ridiculous to think it normal
for 'normal' people
to promise such a thing

-and then to bar others
from making such a choice
when they desperately want to -

no -

give me stripes today
and flowers tomorrow
and polka dots the day after that.

give me a week of hot pink,
a month of seafoam green
and then a couple of days of purple

and then
in the end
what I really want

is plaid.
