stealing your line

by Angela Thomas

resumes don't date.

ain't that the truth.

when you see us together, it's like the odd couple 2.0
stepped out of your TV set and into real life.

what in the world a conservative politician is doing
with someone as antiestablishment and perverse as me
is a mystery to anyone who sees us together.

and in the board room tomorrow, he will lead
the meeting, with authority and gravitas in his voice.
a firm agenda in his head, plans laid for months, chairmen
to appoint, business to conduct. money to make.

i will go to work and spend the day talking to the vegetables,
stirring giant pots of soup and singing while i cook
for hours on end. in the evening, i'll teach for pennies.
i'll give them everything i have and ask for barely
an exchange in return. happiness is enough.

yet, when we're together, i see a boy who may have been
shy at some point and gets insecure and just wants to get
the pretty girl, who grew up an ugly duckling and doesn't
always believe in her own beauty.

i want to make him smile and accept him just the way he is.
he wants to know who i really am and just make me happy.

the truth is we're perfect together.

resumes don't date.

we do.
