watching band of brothers on veterans day

by Gail Wolper

by Gail Wolper

Always I had wondered what would be the moment
that moment when you looked someone in the eye and saw their innocence
saw that they were you
that they came from simple background
had worked hard and studied and played sports
and had buddies and a girlfriend back home
or none. but he looked at you
and his weapon was on the ground
and I knew it. I saw it.
and I fired. and he died. I fired again.
I remember it I will always remember it
He sleeps with me in dreams.
