The Heros Secret by JJ JohnsonHiding the secret
Behind capes and cowels and lies
From everyone who admires you
When the disguise fits so perfectly
The super hero becomes his burden
A barrior between reality and make believe
Justifying the crimes of vigilantism
With arrogance that witnesses birthing legends
While the one locked behind a tattored veil
Forms a prison within the flesh of his reflection
Altered by his ego behind a mirror he longs to smash
Knowing that breaking the glass could shatter
The dreams of falling in love to conceive confidense
From the trials of self-authored crucibles
Seeking justice in his personal conviction
That somehow he saved the ones who looked up
Into his mirror mounted on an invisible cloud
Waiting for Lucy to reveal her ugly head
Waiting for each piece to take its place
To alleviate its own relentless lonliness
Crowded by empty, suffocating lost souls
Allowing his arch enemy to believe his secret is safe
11/29/2012 Author's Note: This is a work in progress. I started writing this today as a response to a poem written by someone I know about falling in love with a super hero. But I have been a comic reader since I was about 4 years old and the one thing about them is that they always have to keep the secret, even from their wives and girlfriends. Superman and Spiderman were the only two I can remember who eventually revealed their secrets to their girlfriends. There were a few who had superhero spouces, so they don't count. I don't recall it ever being an issue for female super heros, but maybe that's because women don't have the over inflated egos that men have, I don't know, just couldn't get it out of my head and decided to write something. I'm thinking of re-writing it or making some modifications, but it is definately not finished yet. JJ
