Puzzling

by Joe Cramer

It's a puzzle
pieces we put together
kindred spirits
you once told me

though I feel more
like a candle in the breeze
not knowing which way
it will blow

always grounded in who I am
though this was not my plan.

(I once preferred 2.5 kids,
a couple of cars, a wife,
nice house, a good job)

none of this worked out for me,
in fact, very little works out
the way I had intentions

Isn't there a road going somewhere
paved with good intentions?

And yet, I am forever thankful
for those who have drifted in,
and exited my life.
My internal strife remains my own,
no dog for this bone
surrounded by this life
and always alone, always alone,
forever I am alone.

The one thing that cannot be taken
are the words, which forever flow.
I am grateful for this, always grateful.

Though I may not be a novelist,
I am always a reader of novels.
Not much of a poet,
though very much the wordslinger.

I am thankful, always thankful.
It could be much worse,
and I may not be here,
there or anywhere for that matter.

I am forever thankful,
always picking up
the discarded puzzle pieces.

I have found that those of us who always keep their mind actively aware of the state of being around them seem always to be alone. That seems to be our unconscious desire even though we deny it. Nice write Joe.

When words are our frequent companion, and creativity is our direction, very little is seemingly achieved, perhaps by design, so we never stop doing it. We are never alone while words are around, because we converse with and to words, even in our own minds. I think it is creativity that keeps us feeling a bit alone oddly, because even showing your craft to those closest is sometimes like showing a picture written in another language, especially those who don't write. That's where the loneliness starts. For me only perhaps, but I do feel where this piece is coming from and conveys well. ~JPP
