Oil and Water, Sunshine and Starlight

by Megan Guimbellot

How weary we are,
those who never sleep sound// sounds that keep us awake/ ghosts that shake our sheets as we try to take one breath after another
force of habit
to keep these fickle hearts of ours beating// beaten/ the battle, lost
the war/ and so we rest our backs upon the night-cool grass in defeat and
in defiance

Watch the stars flame to life one by one like one day when we, too, were absolutely shining//
absolutely absolute
and conscious of our hands as they drew maze-patterned maps over where our hearts both ran away like freight trains in the dark// no horn blast warning to allow us to brace for the crash
the impending impact
the unavoidable
the utterlyregrettablegutwrenchingteethgnashingboneshattering
end of
all
we
built.
Our foundation too shaky, too thrown together
haphazard in our rush to be
as close as possible.
Too much, too soon and it all tumbled down.

I can't apologize, but I can build you a throne out of this rubble and ruin where you can sit
and you can wait
for the sun to color the world again// to steal away the darkness.

"Watch the stars flame to life one by one like one day when we, too, were absolutely shining// absolutely absolute" Brilliant. Gorgeous. You never cease to amaze me.
