For My Rebekah

by Bertram Sparagmos

She, straining, rung by rung, through the stars
I study them by telescope
Their lines and trajectory
Until finally
Tentatively
Triumphantly
Rising from shadow and ash
And heavy chains of life's minting
She reaches out and touches Alpha Centauri
Then she looks down and sticks out her tongue and says, “Told you.”
I can't reveal my hand
But I smile on the inside
As I firmly hold the base of the ladder

Author's Note: For my wonderful, beautiful, capable, but frustratingly stubborn wife who I love from whatever distance she'll let me get to.

Complicated yet simple we are, we women! You use words that paint such evocative images!
