I Promise

by Jeffrey Parren

If you are without
all that you want
it is imperative
to promise yourself
you will do
everything it takes
to attain happiness.

To go along
without hopes and dreams
the body goes wretched
as the mind continues
lifeless, without emotion.

Greater, too,
is the promise
that benefits the long term
as opposed to instantaneous
passion or satisfaction.

Wanting a sports car
or a giant television
can a promise make,
but overall depth
in life and meaning
is lost in consumerism.

I'm even guilty of it.

To start the process
of acknowledging the issue
is to want it to change.

I promise the depths
my life will make
are endless
as long as I have
a blank piece of paper,
an idea,
and incredible people
around me
rooting for my fortune.
