He bought the game last week
at the comic shop.
It was a marvel of miniature plastic pieces
and tomes of instructions.
Hours were spent
assembling, gluing, painting
until finally the characters were ready,
and the game could finally begin.

Then comes a stream of curses
from the other room
where he is setting up for our match.
I find him amidst the wreckage
of the box and wrappers and discarded bits.
He looks up blankly,
as if he can't believe it,
and says

No dice.
