In Between

by Jeffrey Parren

Not smart enough
to win a Pulitzer
not dumb enough
to not care anymore.

Not skinny enough
for skinny jeans
not fat enough
to look oddly sexy.

Not tall enough
to dominate the court
not short enough
to be doubted.

Not handsome enough
to get on with looks alone
not ugly enough
to make up for it.

Not confident enough
to make that leap
not insecure enough
to make that leap.

Not tired enough
to wake up
not awake enough
to be exhausted.

Not hungry enough
to starve for a cause
not bloated enough
to rest on my laurels.

Not wise enough
to have an opinion.

Not experienced enough
to know what's missed.

I'm the in between
of everything
and it's not enough.

I've had enough
of this in between
of everything.

I need my true destiny
to be revealed.

Without it, how can I be alright?
