not the best days

by Artur Desruisseaux

when I was a little

they always said not to hide in those old refrigerators

you know the kind with the handles that would lock

because you would suffocate and die

and to stay away from those mickey mouse acid blotters

it will make you go insane

the ice cream man sold drugs

and your grand parents were drunks

and everyone smoked

and you liked to ride in the back of your dads pick up truck

blonde hair flowing with the wind

and sometimes you would stand on the passenger seat too

you know like 5 or 6 years old

until someone pulled in front of us

and I smashed out the front windshield with my head

I wasn't cut, but it I realized

I had a hard head

mom and dad were always fighting

there was a 1967 Chevy Camaro parked out front

I saw my dad do this 100 times

so I grabbed the keys and started the 1967 camaro

and backed down the driveway

6 years old

I didn't know what to do beyond that

and my older sister ratted me out

"nicks driving the car"

and my dad ran out front and snatched me from the cockpit of that 1967 camaro

slamming me down on the green washing machine we had

slapping my face

"you're too young to be driving"

it was the only time I remember him hitting me

I didn't cry

I only laughed
