whatever this is

by Angela Thomas

oh, sweet boy, i want to tell you that life
changes as time goes on. that fleeting clutching
of the chest with each romance, it becomes softer
and softer, not because the romance is less real

or less substantial, but because, well, you've done
it before. a perfect dish at that perfect restaurant
the second time around is still amazing, but not quite
as spectacular as you remember. drug addicts chase

the first high every hit after, until they overdose
in one final attempt to get back to bliss. we fall
asleep together and wake up in each other's arms
wrapped in smiles and kisses. a hug hello seems

like it's been forever when it's only been a day.
i'm not saying anything except, you'll never feel
for me the way you felt for your first love, and you
never will again, but let's give whatever this is a try.

Oh yes, and how lucky you are to realize it. Well done!
