in the garden

by Peter Humphreys

in the garden
where the brass band played
where love
once lost
was made
flower beds
are trim
as people
there within
behind the windows
looking out
see little has changed
but much

wars
have come
and gone
yet sun
relentless
on this June day
pays homage
not to Venus
but nesting birds
whose calls
scatter
and fall
upon the lonely
tree tiled cottages

no move
is missed
by the furtive
fleeting folk
beyond

in the garden
where the brass band played
I fell in love again
with thee
