Spent

by John Harder

All has drained from inside me
The excitement as you tempt fate
The wonderful wanderings are no more
I'm spent

Your heart keeps changing
Morphing into something new
Something beautiful
that I can't recognize

Time shifts relentlessly
towards that inevitable void
The place of darkness and despair
The place where you no longer linger

I can still feel a glimpse of what was
like a residual fragrance
when the perfect has left
Your love, it was flagrant
Alas, I forget

I try to formulate an answer
What is it I need
Conclusions such as this are elusive
Frustratingly so
