May 21

by Meghan Helmich

When I hear you slur your words
over the phone as I'm leaving work
I know that you are losing yourself
to the gauzy underbelly of despair.

You fill up on those pills
until your bitter tongue can rest,
swollen and gray in your mouth.

I know tomorrow you won't remember
the disappointment in my voice
or the way you've let yourself down.
