May 19

by Meghan Helmich

In college I stopped calling every day
and you never complained.
You sat quietly in your bedroom
of pink Victorian pinstriped walls
and porcelain dolls with surprised faces,
your mirrors covered in photos
of everyone else's children.

No one will ever say you don't know how
to mourn in a whisper
or collect your tears in handfuls.
