May 18

by Meghan Helmich

How must it feel to bend down
into the azalea bushes
and see the ever darkening earth
in your aging fists,
to give birth to a woman.
It must be strange and wonderful
to taste the sharp juices of day
the way no one ever could.

A powerful, arresting image.
