because people change

by Vikki Owens

he said he loved me,
and then he didnt.
because he vowed,
and then he broke it.

i slept alone
in the bed i had shared with him
and listened to the muffled
sounds of him
talking to another,
because he went to those arms
instead of mine,
even though we had rings
to bind us.

thats why.

thats why
a change in your patterns
mean everything they could ever mean.
every branch of quantum theory
comes into play.

thats why
i do not believe you
when you say you love me.

another said the same
and betrayed me.

i have felt so thrown away.
the whole of my life
has been so much trash,
filtered down through hands
that have used me
and tossed me.

how could you promise?
how could you promise and then break it.

because people change,
he said.

and so,
i watch for change,
i fear it.
it hovers around me
like so many ghosts.

Wow...this is so poignant and vibrant...and touches me deeply, as I know the background story. I'm sorry for your pain, but you've expressed it, beautifully.
