judgment call

by Emily Davidson

he calls,
his voice
as intimate
as ever,
a whisper
to my ear—
no speaker or microphone
only warm breath and my jawline

the lucid softness
nonverbal
nonsilence
an ache of the vocal cords
a subtle vulnerability

he is
thanking me
for my honesty
but why do i feel
it's what scared him away?

Some truly beautiful lines before that last stanza sums it up so well. This was wonderful.
