May 1

by Meghan Helmich

The annuals stopped blooming
childlike faces of red and purple.
After a mild winter
coaxed them with warmth
and frosted their petals over night,
they stopped trusting
the sun's hands.

And still new bulbs are planted,
and still they fold out for us.
