the usual perch

by Anastasia Lyn

alone
four legs holding it up to the world
constructed of wood and cloth
pressure makes the fabric sink
and the legs creak in squeaky protest
battered and bruised
and broken and used
inconsequential to noticeable importance
one side sun-stained
the other claw-marked
tilting just a little to the left
marks of abuse ride along its back
there it stays
until someone needs it
