Ely

by Leonard M Hawkes

Neither England nor Nevada—
Never seen before now—
Yet I recognize clearly the song:

Familiar verses of mining
And railroad; recent verses
Of regulation and ranching,

And set to a melody of
Sagebrush and cedar, vastness,
Solitude, and silent stone.

New, but no stranger—
Theme rooted deeply in home—
Varied, but only my “West.”
