You Win or You Die

by Aaron Blair

The more people you love,
the weaker you are,
every emotion a voracious leech,
drawing blood away from your heart.
When they open their mouths
to say that they love you,
their fangs will drip red,
and you’ll find, to your horror,
that you feel cold and you can’t move,
and you used to think you knew
what love meant, but now it’s just
the hollow space inside of you
that draws all your energy in.

That last image is really potent: love as this kind of emotional black hole that sucks all of your energy. I love hard-hitting endings. Nice write

Good quote, and it ties into the piece flawlessly.

Direct, blunt, and correct. I can very much relate to this.

Congratulations on POTD. We all have our idea of what love is except me. I use the word as I so many but not really knowing what people mean by it.

When I was a young teen, I remember feeling like I was meant to defend the innocent of the world. That my destiny was in fighting corporate and government slavery of the masses, or even leading some kind of rebellion should there be civil war. In this I felt having anyone too close to me would put them in harms way, and disillusion my mission and be a liability. Strange how much this poem can relate to that old self. Now I know, without such liabilities, what's the point on fighting?
