A Trendy Nightclub

by Jeffrey Parren

Dating and
relationships and
marriage
are all like
waiting in line
to get into
a trendy nightclub.

Dressed to impress
lined up
like farm animals
in between
red ropes
guiding towards
the inspection point
of hosts and promoters;
the cooler people.

Some are on the guest list
marrying their high school
sweethearts
or maybe the one from college.

I've been waiting in this line
through many outfit and
personality changes

so long that I didn't even
care if I got into the club
anymore.

And then suddenly
the line moves for just me
and I'm not alone.

I notice my name is on the list
and there's a +1.

I look slowly to my side.

It's you?
